Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots. They’re made of titanium and are placed beneath your gum tissue during an outpatient procedure. Following placement, the implants integrate with your jawbone, providing a base for restorations like CEREC crowns, fixed dental bridges, or implant-retained overdentures.

At Image Aesthetic Dentistry, the team doesn’t perform implant surgery. If they determine that you’ll benefit from dental implants, they refer you to an oral surgeon in the Loma Linda area. Following the implant procedure, you return to Image Aesthetic Dentistry and your provider completes the restorative process.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Dental implants offer many advantages, including:

  • Improved confidence
  • Convenience
  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Durability
  • Healthier teeth and gums

In addition, implants are easy to care for. All you have to do is brush them like your natural teeth.

Who qualifies for dental implants?

To receive dental implants, you need enough jawbone to support them and healthy gum tissue. If your jaw is thin and unable to hold the implants, your provider might recommend a prerequisite procedure like a bone graft or periodontal treatment.

What does getting dental implants involve?

Getting dental implants takes anywhere between six months and a year.

Implant placement

You receive dental implants during an outpatient procedure at the office of a local oral surgeon. The number of implants you get depends on how many teeth you’re missing and the type of restoration you want.

Following placement, your mouth heals for several months. Once the implants fuse with your jaw through a process called osseointegration, you return to Image Aesthetic Dentistry.

Restoration design

Your provider takes digital impressions of your mouth and attaches a metal abutment piece to each implant. Afterward, they send your impressions to a laboratory that designs and manufactures your bridge or implant-retained overdentures.

If you’re getting crowns, the team crafts them onsite using the CEREC milling machine. When the machine finishes, your provider attaches the crown to your implants.

Implant restoration

If you’re getting a bridge or overdentures, you return to Image Aesthetic Dentistry when the laboratory finishes your custom restoration. Your provider lines up the prosthetic with the implants and bonds it in place.
